Growing plain tiger butterfly in home

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

I found this caterpillar at the fence of our farm in a calotropis plant and found its details using google lens (Danaus chrysippus ) .

Rules :

  1. Food : 2 calotropis leaves per day

  2. Cage : plastic or glass bottle with airholes

  3. Sanitation : should clean its excreta every morning or evening ( unhygienic cage leads to fungal infection )

Description :

  • Adult : The upperside of the wings are a tawny colour with a black forewing, black wing margins, and white spots. The thorax is black with white spots. and the abdomen is a tawny brown colour. Males are usually smaller than females and may be more brightly coloured. The wingspan is about 7-8 cm.

  • Eggs : ridged dome-shaped eggs laid singly on the underside of the larval host plant, to avoid detection by predators.

  • Caterpillar : yellow and crimson coloration , contains alkaloids collected from the host for defense

  • Pupa : The barrel-shaped pupa suspends itself from the silk pad with no supporting silk girdle (chrysalis) . The pupa could be green, pink even white in coloration.

Fun fact : The vibrant colouration of the Plain Tiger sends a warning signal to its predators — birds, lizards — that they could be toxic. This defense mechanism is known as aposematism
